How To Add Ils App At Fsx Airport

Question Custom ILS appraoch and glide slope

How can i add a ILS approach to an airport that will show up in the list of approaches on the GPS within FS9? I know how to add ILSs to an airport in AFCAD but they wont show up in the GPS and ATC doesnt see them eitheir. Anybody know how to do it?

The freeware ADE9X will add an ILS and you can set it to add a default path to the approach layer that you can edit layer. This will add it so that ai, the GPS, and ATC will recognize it. This is a powerful tool a bit like afcad but also lets you add scenery objects.

For what you want to do you can import data from the stock airport including the approach layer information and build a new airport from scratch, or open directly from an add-on afd (afcad like file) , or mix options. You'll see two view choices. The airport object view that looks like a typical afcad view except it can display scenery object locations and exclusion rectangles that you can modify. Then you can switch to the approach editor view and you'll see the approaches with their waypoints, segments between the IAF, FAF, and runway, the you can edit.

A lot of it is list based so you open let's say a navaid list and then edit or add another one including an IAS that you give properties to. Again if you click add for the navaid you check add approach in its dialog box and it will create a default semicircular path that will show on the GPS including the localizer wedges.

It will install for the FS version you have (it is one download) first using your FS registry path. It is worth checking out your registry with the free registry checker/repair utility from flight1 here:

http://www.flight1.com/view.asp?page=library

The main airport design editor page is here:
http://www.airportdesigneditor.co.uk/

downloads for the utility including the manuals and tutorials are here:

and their forum (always search first so you don't repeat a common question) is here:
http://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=95
and you'll need a free registration for that. Notice there is a pinned thread about approaches.

Read the manual to familiarize your self with the way it works.

It is best to use the recommended two step process. Make your changes and save the to a project folder. These will be in an intermediate language that allows you to go back and make more changes. You can then compile the bgl from this project for insertion into your new scenery folder. If you need corrections or more additions, reopen the project, make your changes, and save the project and then recompile the bgl. Version 150.07 is ciurrent and lets you create two bgls if you opt for that, one for scenery objects and one for the afd file (like afcad or AFX).

Make safe backup of the original scenery folder if an add-on exists.

ADE also in its runway list offers a semi automated function for adding those pseudo crosswind runways between non-parallel runways so they are all active even though they are not parallel.

ILSs added in AFCAD will only be recognized by the user aircraft wheras those added in ADE can be recognized in AI and instruments that extract data from the approach layer.

There is much more to this such as how to import comms from the default or other file that already exist that is explained in the manual as are importing the default approaches This applies if not starting from a default stock airport.

Take a look at it and be patient. I can tell you that the generated code will not cancel existing approach layer data even though it will not show in the approach layer view of an add-on.

You do have to import or redefine the comms if needed.

AFCAD has been known to strip out objects these days from ore advanced afd type files. It will do this with AFX files.

The documentation for ilscreator was written before the ADE added its ability to create default approaches when adding a localizer or ILS approach. ADE works by selecting the runway and then you can add the ILS from that as illustrated below, similar to using AFCAD. Therefore is pretty much almost a two step operation. During design you can drag the ILS around as well.

If you are adding an ILS to an add-on and the comms are defined in that add-on, then they will be brought forward into ADE, correcting what I stated in my previous reply, so those extra steps regarding frequencies are not necessary. This is how AFCAD and I believe AFX works. All objects and excludes in the afd file are included as well as existing approaches if defined in that file. This is true of stock as well. AFCAD did not bring forward approaches nor insert it. ADE will not cancel by default any approaches but you will not see this in the editor unless you have opened a stock airport. You will still see the navaids and the default approach added when you added the ILS or LOC.

Here are the steps and illuistrations:

Open the stock or afd (afcad, ade, afx) using Open from stock airport or open airport from direct bgl. You'll seee the diagram. You may want to use the mouse scroll wheel and arrow keys to position the runway. Click on the runway to select it. Right click on the runway to bring up the following context boxes:

Name: adding ade ils.jpg Views: 479 Size: 40.3 KB

Click on Add, then ILS.

Name: adding ade ils - properties.jpg Views: 476 Size: 33.1 KB

Default properties have been assigned. Choose the runway you wish to use, whether or not dme, GS, and backcourse are enabled, and then be sure create approach is checked. Adjust the ident and frequency. Click ADD. The result is displayed on the airport diagram and in the approach view below.

Click image for larger version.     Name:	added ils approach ade.jpg   Views:	166   Size:	81.4 KB   ID:	107906

Notice a default missed approach was added that you can edit out or change in the approach view. In the approach view you can add legs to create a teardrop I suppose or descending race track. You can drag elements to chane the ILS/LOC to an offset heading or off runway location to create an LDA like at LOWI or even create a take-off localizer assist.

Go back to the airport view and save the airport to a project folder for further editing if needed. You then do File, compile airport, saving the .bgl to the project folder or elesewhere. a default name is suggested. Insert it in the existing add-on scenery renaming the original afd file or create a folder for it to be placed at high priority in the scenery library.

This took longer to describe then accomplish and is in fewer steps then ilscreator.

I'm new to ADE but I should also add that you can insert a background image for guidance such as an airport diagram for the main view.

I apologize for the slight misleading procedure in my previous post.
